Every infant should have one, but you won’t find it on any baby registry. Every toddler needs one, but they won’t use it for another 10-15 years. So all you parents out there – listen up!
Give your child their own internet domain! Boost your infant or toddler’s future geek potential right now!
When you register a domain for your child, it reserves a little slice of the internet landscape that you can use now and your children can take over and use when they grow older. When John and Jane Doe have a little boy named Jack Frank Doe, they should go out and register jackdoe.com, jackdoe.net or a suitable alternative if those are not available (think jackfrankdoe.com or jackdoehome.com). We have done this with both of our children and we are glad we did.
With the internet landscape changing all the time, who knows what the internet will look like in 15 years when your baby is a teenager and wants to have his own domain. Right now you stand a good chance of being able to find a suitable .com or .net domain for your kids, but when 2022 rolls around, your teenager might have to settle for a website that looks like: http://jackfrankdoe.dallas.northtexas.texas.us.northamerica.world.info. This may sound extreme, but a few years ago would you have thought there would be .fm, .mobi, .tv, .ws, .name domain extensions. These along with many other domain extensions where added because the .com and .net extensions are already crowded.
Imagine the old school “tech cred” that jackdoe.com might give Jack in the future when all his friends have outrageously long websites and email addresses that are difficult to remember.
Also, there is an added bonus for techie or geeky parents that know their way around a computer. This is your opportunity to build a website where you can share updates, stories, pictures, and movies about your child. All your family and friends can be kept up to date with your baby’s progress and what milestones they are reaching. You could use
Blogger for updates and
Snapfish for pictures, but there is a very satisfying feeling of putting it all in one place that you built yourself. Building your own site gives you the most flexibility and complete control to determine who can view what content, who can view pictures, and what visitors can do on your site.
If this sounds like a good idea to you but you don’t know where to start, go on over to
Godaddy to get your cheap domain and website hosting. I would also recommend
Wordpress for those looking for a ready made, relatively easy to configure content platform.
